Why I think that RotS is the greatest prequel movie

Post Body

I think RotS masterfully tells a cautionary tale of societal downfall, with a critical lesson for societies today (US, China especially).

Disguised in all the blasters, aliens, clones and droids, you have a classic story of how a democracy can quickly turn into a dictatorship. It expertly parallels the two main opposing political systems: democracy and dictatorship, with the two opposing orders of the force: jedi and the sith.

With an entire galaxy at war, it makes sense why everyone wants it to end, therefore the Senate elects to give the chancellor emergency powers. This also oversteps the squabble of democracy, which can take ages to reach important decisions. Here we see a lack of patience, a sith trait; Patience is key to being a jedi.

Nowadays the political divide is getting dangerously wide. People are desperate for their party to be in control, making the decisions that they believe will be best for society. But without the checks and balances of democracy, without patience to deliberate, it will give way to greed and injustice. RotS understands this.

The galactic citizens are desperate for the war to end, and Anakin is desperate to keep Padme alive. Palpatine is an evil genius because he uses these opportunities to seize power and a new apprentice, at the same time. He knows what the masses want - no, what they despair for - and uses that mass desperation to seize total power. Obvious comparisons here to nazi Germany and the Soviet Union. (And this dude Palatine is so evil that he CREATES a war, just so he can use the collective suffering to take over the GALAXY)

Anyway, the lesson here is that even in the most desperate of times, in the worst case scenario: galactic war or threat of losing a loved one, you never let your desperation control you. You trust in the values of democracy and, yes, the jedi. Checks and balances, deliberation, patience. Otherwise you'll have a system that controls you, instead of one that gives you a voice.
