Their was a Jedi temple on Ahch-To, but what was the pit/underground ?

In the novelization of the TLJ, Rey speaks of whispers in the force that guided the Jedi explorers to this temple on Ahch-To, but as we all know there is something in the lower levels of Ahch-To that is powerful with the dark side, and other than Luke's take of "Powerful light, powerful darkness" we really don't know much about the history of this part of the island. Were their once dark side users on this island as well ? Did the Sith ever call this home ? I'd love to hear some theories.
