What is the root of their disdain for each other? They both acknowledge it and actively maneuver to make their spouse feel worse about their life and choices. It's a strange and complex relationship, with a strong 180 flip when Mon gaslights(?) Perrin in front of their driver to further conceal her financial issues.
So what caused this. Referencing Mon's "firebrand" comment, I think Perrin came to Coruscant shortly after Order 66 and completely flipped out over Palpatines power grab. He was about to call his regiment in and stage a countercoup against Palpatine and his clones.
And Mon talked him down. Told him that democracy will find it's way. That the Senate still existed, and what the Senate gave it could also take away. That they needed some time for the veneer to fade as Palpatine overreached and made mistakes.
And Perrin says fuck that, I'm bringing the war into 500 Republica, Palpatine will hang from the rafters before anyone realizes what's happened, I'll gladly die.
And Mon says... I'm pregnant.
Do you want this child to not have a father?
Cut to present.
