Really enjoyed series 4. Tarka was an interesting protagonist. I've been hoping to see a race like Species 10C in Star Trek for a very long time , a truly alien species, non-bipedal, almost incomprehensible to us - really out there. Burnham's changed a lot and is acting like a true Captain. I loved a lot about the series, but like everything there's always room for improvement.
The formula feels a wee bit tired now though. That's 3 times in a row we've had a Control, a Burn and a DMA threaten our very existence. High stakes, epic finale, pace suffers after the midpoint as it builds to the finale. I know the Burnham-haters say shes made out to be the ultimate saviour but that's clearly not based on series 3 or 4 - she didnt single-handedly stop the Burn or the DMA. Her character has grown a lot, to the point shes now the de facto Captain of the ship. The solutions to the big threats over the past two series have been about the crew working together so it's natural now to change the tone and let the crew do their real Starfleet jobs. Next series they should be exploring and consolidating the Federation, see some of the old races who haven't yet rejoined the Fed, update us on how the Klingons and the Bajorans and the Cardassians are getting on in the 32nd Century. That'd be interesting to watch. If there's gonna be 7 series like DS9 and TNG (which I hope there is) then maybe have the last 3 be about building the world of the Milky Way Galaxy for us - show us who is who. What happened to the Borg? Did Sisko ever return? We've seen one Changeling - are the Founders still hiding in the Great Link? Did Harry Kim ever get promoted?? Stuff I would really enjoy seeing in Discovery. I'm assuming there'll be a spin off show set in the 32nd Century once Discovery ends, so set the scene.
All being said, I remember the dark days after Enterprise when we thought Star Trek was dead. Reboot/Kelvin films were OK but Trek is best as a TV show first and foremost. Always will be. Picard series 2 has been good so far. Strange New Worlds looks interesting. If the Georgiou show happens then I'm up for it. Lower Decks is fun. So many shows, so many different styles, these are good times for Trekkies.
