Series 3 was a hugely welcome distraction to 2020's COVID lockdowns. It was also - in my opinion - a series-long reboot of the show leading to a 4th series that'll be more like a blending of TNG/TOS with DS9 - exploring strange new worlds again (in delivering dilithium again to planets and species long isolated from the Federation during the Burn) whilst also incorporating DS9's political intrigue and philosophical themes (what it means to be the Federation in the 32nd Century, what those values are and how they mix with alternative ideologies like those on non Federation worlds).
One example of what I thought was sound writing was Ni'Var. The unification of the Vulcan & Romulan people was always on the cards following TNGs 2-parter Unification 1 & 2 (my favourite TNG episodes) & the destruction/dispersion of the Romulans following the supernova in Picard/the Kelvin movies. There were several ways the Discovery writing staff could have presented a unified Vulcan/Romulan race again however - in my opinion - the fact we're presented with Vulcans and Romulans largely of the same differing ideologies we've known since TOS, only over the last 1000 years they've grown to a point where these differing ideologies can coexist peacefully through democracy, dialogue and working together is as Star Trek as it gets. This makes more sense than the alternative, creates a possibility for intriguing 3 dimensional stories from Ni'Var in future and makes me want to know more about the history of Unification since Picard and see more of Ni'Var in both the remaining series of Discovery and whatever shows set in the the 32nd Century follow.
