On Monday, I had a great show. Possibly the greatest I've ever put on. You know how you have one of those nights where everything clicks, your timing is spot on, and you deliver your jokes, BAM, BAM, BAM? Yeah, I had that.
Yesterday, I was flying high. I was networking, having some drinks, generally enjoying being a comic.
Hoo boy, I bombed hard. I mean, I got some laughs where they should be, but they were the perfunctory kind. Like, the crowd knew where they should laugh, but I didn't sell it at all, and it was pretty much exclusively because I drank slightly too much. And that's what surprised me. I wasn't even buzzed, but everything I did was just...off.
I know this is something most of you already know, but for those who haven't experienced such an extreme difference between two shows, even small amounts of alcohol definitely makes a difference in how well you do. And what's so insidious about it is that a lot of us can think of things that a bit of alcohol has made us better at, because you can get into that concentration zone with just the right amount, so I fell into the trap of thinking it might loosen me up onstage. Yeah, I was wrong. Timing is king, and just a few fractions of a second screwed me up hard.
Now of course there are guys who are actually funnier under the influence. Some of you will quite likely find that you might be one of them. Myself, I'm never going to have more than a drink before a show again. I pride myself on being professional, and I wasn't. At least I didn't go over time.
Anyway, I'm rambling, so tl;dr don't do mind-altering substances unless you're sure it makes you funnier and it's been proven before a crowd multiple times.
Keep on enjoying the process guys!
