Moving to St Louis - first timer

Post Body

Hi everyone! Iā€™ve been silently perusing this subreddit for awhile now, but figured Iā€™d make my first post since I will be officially moving to St. Louis for grad school this summer.

This will be a lot of ā€œfirstsā€ for me. My first time moving, first time being on my own, first time attending grad school, first time living somewhere other than the east coast.

I guess Iā€™m looking for any tips for a newb. Iā€™m a bi-racial, 26 year old woman, Iā€™ve looked around the tower grove, dog town, Shaw, Clayton area for rentals, but I think itā€™s still too early to tell what will be available since I wonā€™t be moving until July. I own a car. And I have a partner, but as of right now Iā€™ll be moving on my own.

What are some red flags I should look for when renting?

Definitely looking for rent under 1k since Iā€™ll be living on a grad student budget, but that doesnā€™t seem too difficult to find (which is awesome).

Is there any good Japanese food or a market to buy japanese food?

If youā€™re a transplant to St. Louis how long did it take for you to get your footing?

Any general advice or tips?

Overall, Iā€™m super excited to visit and move to St. Louis. It seems like a fantastic place. Iā€™m just trying to be as prepared as possible to ease any jitters I have.

Thank you in advance!!

Hey! Donā€™t know if this is too personal to ask, but are you Japanese? Because Iā€™m Japanese and was in a situation similar to you a few months ago moving out to St. Louis from the East Coast a few months ago! Iā€™m still learning about a lot of the city, but honestly iā€™ve yet to find any good Japanese restaurants or markets. Iā€™ve heard good things about Nobuā€™s, but theyā€™re temporarily closed while changing locations from Olive to the Loop, apparently. Also, corner 17 is good if youā€™re thinking Asian food, but more Chinese rather than Japanese.

honestly iā€™ve been there twice and their stuff is just way too overpriced for its quality, at least in my opinion.
