Hi everyone! Iāve been silently perusing this subreddit for awhile now, but figured Iād make my first post since I will be officially moving to St. Louis for grad school this summer.
This will be a lot of āfirstsā for me. My first time moving, first time being on my own, first time attending grad school, first time living somewhere other than the east coast.
I guess Iām looking for any tips for a newb. Iām a bi-racial, 26 year old woman, Iāve looked around the tower grove, dog town, Shaw, Clayton area for rentals, but I think itās still too early to tell what will be available since I wonāt be moving until July. I own a car. And I have a partner, but as of right now Iāll be moving on my own.
What are some red flags I should look for when renting?
Definitely looking for rent under 1k since Iāll be living on a grad student budget, but that doesnāt seem too difficult to find (which is awesome).
Is there any good Japanese food or a market to buy japanese food?
If youāre a transplant to St. Louis how long did it take for you to get your footing?
Any general advice or tips?
Overall, Iām super excited to visit and move to St. Louis. It seems like a fantastic place. Iām just trying to be as prepared as possible to ease any jitters I have.
Thank you in advance!!
Hey! Donāt know if this is too personal to ask, but are you Japanese? Because Iām Japanese and was in a situation similar to you a few months ago moving out to St. Louis from the East Coast a few months ago! Iām still learning about a lot of the city, but honestly iāve yet to find any good Japanese restaurants or markets. Iāve heard good things about Nobuās, but theyāre temporarily closed while changing locations from Olive to the Loop, apparently. Also, corner 17 is good if youāre thinking Asian food, but more Chinese rather than Japanese.

honestly iāve been there twice and their stuff is just way too overpriced for its quality, at least in my opinion.
