As a fellow getting close to his 40's and grew up in southern Ohio watching ICW, Stampede, IWA Japan, BTW, NWA(Wcw), ECW, WWF, HWA, and OVW.
I can safely say that I've seen every style, of wrestling on the planet. I'm not an expert, but I don't forget what I know. I would also curse my fanboy uncle who turned me onto this wonderful obsession with his mountain of old VHS wrestling tapes.
That being said here's my brief view of Kenny Omega.
Kenny Omega is the greatest Japanese Wrestling worker on the planet, meaning he can ONLY do good work with a Japanese Audience.
When he's in America working for the AEW crowd, he's incredibly awkward, has no charisma, no psychology, and his signature "JazzHands" just don't work with American crowd.
Wrestling traditionalists like myself prefer wrestling that looks like a tough smash mouth fight, with larger than life badass personality, and guys that look like they want to kill each other. You know like an actual sporting competition.
Problem with Omega, he looks like a broadway jazz tap performer that wants to show off his latest gymnastics floor routine.
It's even more baffling when he wants to due cable access level "WACKY" comedy promos, that aren't remotely funny.
You get the sense that if he actually tried a little bit harder, he could learn how to adapt to American style wrestling but chooses to play it safe.
But at the end the day, he's this generation HHH. Meaning that he only does good work when the guy he's working with is significantly more talented than him, such as Okada, Pac, Page, and Moxley.
I fully understand why he has such a loyal fanbase, but realistically if Omega wants to grow and get out of his nichey fanbase to reach the traditionalist like myself.
Then he NEEDS to learn how to work for an American style crowd.
But hey what do I know, I just miss when wrestling looked like a bloody sporting competition and not just a bunch of nerdy semi athletic men that look there going to put on a theatrical chorus line version of wrestling.
