I was thinking about the recent news about Mauro -- it seems obvious that in addition to the bullying issue, Vince just wasn't sold on Mauro's style of commentary.
It got me thinking -- who's out there developing unique styles in commentary? Who would get a huge pop if they signed onto WWE as a commentator, based purely on their mic skills?
A lot of the indie wrestling I watch just seems to default to a kind of bland, middle of the road play-by-play style, nothing really new like Joey Styles was in the 90s. Excalibur's commentary in PWG is often funny and interesting, but I don't think he wakes up in the morning thinking about how to do better play-by-play. Kevin Kelly is great, but again, he's a known entity. I couldn't even think of the names of the Evolve or Shine broadcast teams without Googling them.
Who's innovating? Who's the [insert your favorite indie wrestler here] of commentary?
