Thought of this when I saw a list of who produced matches at Bad Blood. These days do any top level guys produce their own matches? If not, has that always been the case? I've heard stories about guys talking over what they are going to do backstage and basically just coming up with it together, as well as some matches where only the finish or a couple of big spots are decided beforehand and everything else is just calling audibles and paying attention to the crowd. Is that a thing anymore?
The big spots are what the producer is for. The producer provides insight on the goals the booker has for the match, and also communicates big spots to the TV production.
So, say you've got Roman Reigns versus Solo Sikoa, and the big spot is a run-in by Jacob Fatu. With the producer, Roman and Solo work out a spot in the match that will allow Fatu to run in. While this is happening, the producer is working with the production truck, telling them to be ready for the spot. The camera guys will get in position so Fatu's run in comes off as a surprise to viewers watching.
As for all the work in between, it depends. DDP, Rock, and Savage all liked planning out their matches to the last detail. Some guys like Flair called it all mostly in the ring, but Flair also had a set of spots he liked to do in each match.
