I was bored so I decided to compile some stats in regards to Meltzer's star ratings particularly 5 star matches. I will not provide any commentary about the stats. I think they'll speak for themselves.
Since Meltzer started ratings in 1982 he has awarded 5 or more stars to a total of 224 matches.
For the first 30 years of Meltzer rating matches, 1982-2012, he awarded 5 or more stars to only 99 matches. 44.2% of all 5 star matches.
Since 2013, he has awarded 5 stars or more to 125 matches in just a little over 10 years. 55.8% of all 5 star matches.
Since May 25, 2019, the date of AEW's first PPV, he has awarded 5 or more stars to 78 matches. 34.8% of all 5 star matches.
NJPW in 30 years of having matches rated has had 5 or more stars awarded to 82 matches, the most of any promotion. 36.6% of all 5 star matches.
AJPW in 30 years of having matches rated has had 5 or more stars awarded to 35 matches, the 2nd most of any promotion. 15.6% of all 5 star matches.
AEW in only just under 4 years of existence and having matches rated has had 5 or more stars awarded to 20 matches, 3rd most of any promotion. 8.9% of all 5 star matches.
WWE in 30 years of having matches rated has had 5 or more stars awarded to 18 matches, 5th most of any promotion (All Japan Women's Pro-Wrestling is 4th with 19). 8% of all 5 star matches.
Will Ospreay & Mitsuharu Misawa both have had 5 or more stars awarded to 25 matches they were involved in, the most of any wrestlers. 11.2% of all 5 star matches. Since none of the 5 star matches featured both Ospreay & Misawa, that means 22.3% of all 5 star matches featured either Ospreay or Misawa.
Will Ospreay (25 tied for most) & Kenny Omega (22 third most) are the only two non Japanese wrestlers in the top 10 wrestlers involved in the most 5 star mstches.
Ric Flair having been involved in 12 matches awarded 5 stars is the only wrestler in the top 20 to have those matches outside of Japan, Mexico, or AEW/ROH/indies.
An incomplete list of wrestlers who have never been involved in a 5 star match as a singles competitor: Kurt Angle, Eddie Guerrero (has been in a 5 star tag match in AAA), Jake Roberts, Curt Hennig, Dean Malenko, Randy Savage.
The first match to ever receive above a 5 star rating was a match at an NWA house show between Ric Flair & Ricky Steamboat. Meltzer was in attendance and rated the match 6 stars. This rating is technically unofficial as the rating system is only used for PPV/TV matches. The first official match to receive a rating of more than 5 stars was Kenny Omega vs Kazuchika Okada on January 4th, 2017. There have been 39 matches officially awarded higher than 5 stars. The 39 highest rated matches of all time have taken place in the last 6 years and 3 months.
28 of the 39 highest rated matches of all time took place in NJPW. 6 have taken place in AEW. 4 have taken place in WWE, all under either the NXT or NXT UK brand.
Finally, the parking lot brawl between Santana & Ortiz vs the Best Friends and the Anarchy in the Arena match between the JAS and BCC, Eddie Kingston, Santana & Ortiz are both matches that received a rating of 5 stars. Those two matches are rated equally to the Flair/Steamboat trilogy & Austin vs Bret at WM13 among others. Those two matches are rated higher than Savage vs Steamboat at WM 3 (4.5 stars) & Bret Hart vs Mr. Perfect (4 stars) to name a couple.
What are your thoughts on these stats?
