Thinking about Droz in relation to Damar Hamlin.
Post Body

I was one of maybe 12,000 people in attendance for the smack down taping a that night in October 1999. I had perfect seats 3 or 4 rows up from the floor, dead center of the ring. The main camera was just behind me. I remember nothing from that taping other than the injury. The match was going fine, D-Lo set up for his running power bomb, took a step and then suddenly fell straight forward. My first thought was “I didn’t know D-Lo did a pancake move, or perhaps Farooq’s dominator” From my perspective it looked like perhaps droz’s hair got under D-Lo’s boot, others have said that D-Lo couldn’t get a good grip because droz’s shirt was loose. Either way, D-Lo fell, and Droz had already tucked his head in in order to receive the power bomb. Suddenly medics rushed to the ring. The enduring image that is seared into my memory is Droz convulsing. He wasn’t just shaking, his entire body was moving, but not in a normal way. He was coming completely off the ground because the signals from his brain had been severed and his muscles were just going nuts. Shane and Vince both came to ringside, this was at the height of evil Vince, but neither were in character. I remember there were two 10 year old kids next to me with their mom who didn’t understand what was happening. I told them they needed to go look at merchandise or something for a while. Someone said he was in the ring for 30 minutes, I thought it was much less. The fact that the Hospital he was taken to was within seconds of the arena likely is the reason he is alive today. But that moment made wrestling way less important to me than it had been before. I was 19, so I still kept watching, but within a year I pretty much lost interest. I’ll still check things out, watch a match or two, but it’s not the same anymore. And the NFL won’t be the same either.
