As the title says, where do you source your wood for carving? I'm thinking of phoning a local tree surgeon to see if I can maybe buy some off them, what kind of wood should I ask them if they have? I've heard fruit woods are good? Any help is much appreciated! Thanks
I do work in a cooperage so I have french American and east european oak handy plus untreated seasoned pine in the pallet stack. Everything else is sourced by word of mouth people that did fell trees and need someone to limb and cut the firewood mostly.
In terms of species I like birch and birch a lot more than oak, a little elm, an fruit trees (apple cherry and nuts) chestnut is nice but very small and you can't work it quarter grain which makes it really prone to cracking.
As for the process, the most efficient is to split it and use quarter split wood that won't crack and get a watertight bottom naturally (avoids liquids to soak in)
