I've read that Hitman is a good alternative to SC

I'm not looking for a big critique on the virtues of that franchise vs. SC. Splinter Cell is my all time favorites series. But I am very confused about all the different Hitman options. I'd actually like to get the first three games for Xbox, but it's not clear at all what to buy. There are a lot of statements about how you only get certain levels as opposed to an entire game. Any light you could shed on this, would be really helpful. Thank you!
