Why no symbiote powers?

When Spidey gets the symbiote suit he almost never has any big symbiote related powers like shapeshifting weapons/tendrils and what not, or even getting other powers, why is that? I get part of it really simply is just at that point in the marvel history what Symbiotes could do was very much an unknown, also he rarely wears a symbiote after that, but even when he does he doesn’t get any big powers so why is that?
