The Death of Spider-Man
Post Body

I consider myself a fan. I've acquired digital copies of most issues, I've been reading ASM off and on for years and I feel I'm quite knowledgeable about 616 Spider-Man. And it's something I enjoy.

I've also tried reading Ultimate, a few times actually. It just never stuck with me, maybe because it's as much origin story that, in my head, is wrong, as it is just a different take. But I am/was happy it's out there, more people to get bitten by the Spider.

So tonight I finally decided to read The Death of Spider-Man. And I'm kind of disappointed. I know it existed, I've seen the excerpts people post here and over at /r/comicbooks from the set. I loved the shot with Uncle Ben, I loved Steve Rogers talking to Aunt May.

But it felt so strange. Maybe it's because the Fury/Danvers/Greg Stark storyline was mixed through it, but the death felt so tangential to the story. He was/is the lead character in the Ultimate line, he is one of Marvel's most popular heroes, he is the best.

And it was just off. The set up for the eventual death was great. Peter died as he lived, a hero. He caught a bullet for Captain America, but then they leave him. They don't scour the scene or anything after the fight continues. And I understand that is due to the fact there is an actual fight.

Then he stops Goblin, Electro, Kraven, Vulture and Sandman. Which is bad-ass. But the death is so sudden. He just laid there, being death. That's it. We got a page or two more and it's the end of the book. It felt so hurried, so incomplete compared to the rest of the story.

The burial was beautifully drawn, the art was great. The chapel scenes I love, but I'm a sucker for military/state funerals, I think they're truly beautiful and inspiring. But it was such a clusterf*ck. The Thor scene didn't make sense, one moment he's in the church, the next he's with the world tree. I personally would've preferred a split-panel with a person making a speech, or sharing words with Aunt May, and then the scene in which Peter touched them.

I just had to share this. I don't have friends who'd understand this, so here, /r/Spiderman, my first contribution.

Would there be more interest in my rambling on cross-book events :P?
