The thing is, Volume 4 of ASM made Peter the new Tony Stark. And this, in my opinion, was a terrible idea. Not just because Peter doesn't know what to do with billions of dollars, but because it runs counter to a running theme of the book. In Peter's world, wealth and power lead to misery. Norman's crumbling company leads to his becoming the Green Goblin. Adrian Toomes feeling slighted by his company fuels his desire to become the Vulture. And then there are men like Wilson Fisk and J. Jonah Jameson, who should be happy due to their wealth and influence, yet are deeply broken and miserable. Having Peter run a major company the way Tony does shows a complete misunderstanding of what Peter fights against.
Volume 4 should have made Peter the next Reed Richards.
Now, granted, Reed's not perfect. But he's not about the money. Money is a side-effect of science. Reed is all about learning, exploring new worlds, understanding new cultures, etc. And that's how Peter should have been written. A Peter Parker in Reed's position wouldn't have gotten his tech hacked by Otto. He wouldn't have worked for SHIELD. And he could have sustained a relationship beyond shallow workplace sex. This is the character that I, for one, would prefer to read about.
