How did you get your aide?
Post Body

I really need someone who can be with me all day to help me with ADLs but it seems like that's not an option w/o qualifying for protective supervision. I don't understand how to get that kind of help.

My understanding is that since, outside of meltdowns, my self-injurious stimming only causes mild injury. And since it's mostly safe to leave me alone when in the house, I wouldn't qualify for protective supervision through IHSS. And I don't really need someone here at night, I just can't do ADLs consistently on my own and I do bite myself & pick at my skin so I need someone here when I'm awake to prompt me to do my ADLs and interrupt that behavior.

Right now I do get in-home support services but my hours are very limited. I just spoke to my social worker to see if I could get more hours and she said she'll do what she can but that with things like prompting to start and continue a task they can only pay for the time spent prompting and not the time spent watching to see when prompts are needed.

Similarly they can only pay for the time spent interrupting my self-injurious stimming and not any time spent watching to see when I start doing it. I don't know how I'm supposed to find an aide that's willing to be here all day without being consistently paid for their labor/time, it kind of feels wrong to even ask that of someone.

I am applying to the Regional Center here, which is the place that coordinates services for people with developmental disabilities. But I don't know if this kind of care is something they can cover or if it's something they would just refer me back to IHSS for.

I don't want to have to go to something like supported living, I don't think I would do well in a group home and I'm worried assisted living (where you have your own unit to live in) would still not allow me to have my animals.
