Are there any pathways by which Hermaphroditism could re-evolve in a mammal? All of the examples that I know of are either in invertebrates in in ray-finned fish. My best guess?
The ancestor is a harem-based animal, with one male keeping many females and many male loners.
A male that is fully male while possessing the secondary sexual characteristics of a female- for example, a male lion that loses its mane- so as to appear less threatening, and perhaps even sneak into the harem to mate with claimed females, and also to receive the protection of the male in question.
Over a sufficiently long time, could these fem-males evolve into true hermaphrodites?
