Trying to extend cable causes Internet to not work

So, moved to one place and the only outlet that provides service is just a cord already coming out of the wall. It's not quite a foot long, so having to just prop the router up on a box against the wall for now.

I figured if I just used a female to female piece, I could then use my own cable, there would be plenty of cable and I could set it up however I needed. Problem is, internet hasn't come back since adding the female piece. Could it be faulty, or is this a case of just changing one thing broke it?
