Tried multi melta as heavy (my friends only play as bulwark and assault)

Tried multi last night for the first time after finishing my campaign finally. My friends refuse to try any other classes except for bulwark and assault (until they max them out) and I've found its the way to to when playing with melee teammates. But that had me thinking,

Given the comps were different (swap tactical for bulwark or sniper etc) I know I would take either the plasma or bolter. Where I'm having an issue is I keep seeing videos/discussions on how one is better than the other blah blah.

In your guys opinion, which would you choose if you had to pick between bolter and plasma?
