Gate Check Walker

My grandma is flying Southwest tomorrow for the first time and is wondering how the process works for gate checking a walker. She has mobility issues and wants to use her walker through the airport and gate check it. Does she need to gate check it while waiting at the gate for boarding or while she is in line to board? And does she collect it at baggage claim? Is there anything else she should keep in mind? Thanks in advance she is a nervous flier and wants to know what to expect.
