Preview and render looks grey/dark and pixelated

For some reason my preview screen (and when I render), looks grey/dark and pixelated.
I don't know how to explain it so here's a picture.
On the left (the pan/crop box) is what its supposed to look like, but on the right you can see the preview which is how it looks in renders. Why?
