Virginia won't keep/use the guns I give her

Has anyone else experienced this?
I've given her the pistol twice and the shotgun once. When I put them in her inventory she holds them, but whenever I go back to her I have the option to give her those guns again.
She's never shot at any cannibals invading our base. Any fix for this?
