Here's an easy step-by-step process that you can use to create a melody from scratch to chord melody. A good tip for writing memorable melodies is to follow a scale. The key (scale) of a song determines the chord structure. Here is an easy way to find the key of your song and build the chords from that key. I also show how to form a melody over a simple chord progression. This is one of many approaches to songwriting. Does this help?

In this revision of “I Cried,” I switched some chords in the verse progression, going from the six chord to the secondary dominant of the three chord, resolving to the three chord: Dm-E-Am7. Does this sound enhance the mood/lyrics? I also added more piano arpeggio patterns.

Back in the day, I was captivated by the sound of the flute as heard in this song. I produced this one on the Fantom G8 long time ago. I'm impressed by the way I applied the drums and the variety of sounds in the bridge. I would add more expressive piano movement and end the song at 3:31. Thoughts?

I wrote my first song ever at the age of 12. My parents had put me in summer camp, and I literally wrote my entire experience into a song lol. Just melody and lyrics. To this day, I can look at the lyrics and still remember the melody. I'm adding chords for the first time by ear training. Thoughts?

In all my years of writing music I don't think I've ever written a song in a minor key. However, I have turned songs from major to minor. I used a popular song example to show how your ear can tell you the minor key of a song. Does this method work for you? Is it helpful?

This is how I am able to figure out what key my song or any song is in (if I don't already know). All it takes is your ear. And then, to apply what you are hearing to an instrument helps too. I don't want to further complicate things. Does this make sense?

I revised the piano for "A Little Too Late." I hope it maintains the momentum of the original. What do you think? The chord progressions were also adjusted to fit within one key. I understand the sound I was trying to create when I wrote this song. Haven't achieved it yet, but I'm close.

Another Fantom G8 song I produced myself many years ago. This one needs some polishing. For example, I should have kept the same drum pattern throughout or some variation. The second verse drums completely shift, sounds like a different song. Anyone know what instruments I'm playing in the outro?

I'm really trying to gain confidence in my older songs. I've noticed over the years that I have become overly critical of them, constantly thinking of ways to revise. Too much revision can alter the original intent. For "Rhythm of the Music" chords are the same with some added notes. Any thoughts?

When I was younger I had a Roland Fantom G8 workstation keyboard that I used to produce a bunch of songs myself. This is one of them. I'm super embarrassed to post it, because this was before I learned theory. I don't even know the chord progressions I'm playing lol. Is that an electric guitar?

This song is a work in progress. I added an instrumental bridge for the first time I think. Gotta check my old songs to confirm. I feel like I can do more with the left hand in the bridge. I just don't want to take away from the right hand movement. Any suggestions for left hand?

For this chorus melody, I use just 3 chords (Db-Eb-Ab) with variations of extended notes for flavor and to create more interesting options. Does the Ab(6/9)/C in the first half catch you off guard? If so, why?

Here are the chords for "You and I." Where I say subdominant I mean secondary dominant. How was the transition? When writing extended chords which is more common "add13" or "add6?" If I want to leave out the 7th and 9th of a chord, but include the 11th and 13th, would it be "add11/13" or "add4/6?"

"You and I" - the strings I arranged using mostly 4-part harmony. The piano was the last part of the song I created. It took me a long time to find the right accompaniment patterns to support my vocals, which is usually not the case. Did I add the right piano style? Strings audible? Thanks!
