Lately I've been struggling to write music. Well, music that I think replicates artists I admire. It's like, I can write songs fine, it just doesn't sound like how I want it to sound.

At first I thought it was a technical issue. Like, my composition needed to sound more like their music. So I started trying to learn how to recreate their compositions, but that still didn't really work for me. Especially in terms of lyric generation.

Since then, I've realised part of the issue is that I don't really understand the "character" which I'm playing. That is, the person behind the music. I then realised that although I understood this character (myself) on a superficial level, I never truly understood my intentions and motivations, aside from "wanting to make music like X person because it sounds good".

That's when I discovered this idea of "vision" in music.

When you listen to music (it's a lot easier if there's lyrics) but ultimately, the artist is painting a vision of the world in some way, which the listener is consuming.

In the case of an artist like Kyunchi, his vision is basically summed up as being a beauty guru influencer, and all his songs relate to that idea in some fashion. It transcends feeling and emotion, into an actual identity.

In large part, the reason it's a vision is because music is a shared experience. When thousands of people listen to a song, it's because they want to be part of that reality. Part of that identity which is being created, almost in the same way as a physical location would be.

Basically, I realised that although I'm good at elaborating on certain ideas, my persona didn't really have a greater vision that it wanted shared with the world. It knew what it wanted in the moment, but not long term for it's audience.

I'm still not quite sure what my vision is yet, but it's something I'm aware of now, and am actively working on.

With this said, how would you describe the vision you have for your own music as an artist?

On a side note, one thing which really helped me was studying how people create characters for things like TV shows and DnD. Put simply, give your character two wants. Those wants then drive everything they do. Also, it can help to describe this in each song you create.

"<Name> is a <adjective> <type> who wants <goal>".

"Kyunchi is an obsessed beauty influencer who wants to live in a hyper beauty guru fantasy."
