How to be more metaphorical and cryptic in lyrics?

Post Body
I feel like a lot of people are naturals at doing this in their writing, but when I try I usually fail and the lyrics just sound really literal and shitty. Besides time and practice, are there other strategies you would recommend to make my lyrics have more depth and crypticism?

or mishearing your own lyrics.
get a notebook that's just for lyrics
set aside 10 minutes per day to try to write the most unusable lyrics you can think of. Starting with a question can help ("off the wall? I was never on it." etc etc). If you can't think of anything start with "I can't think of anything". Just get the pen moving and bump the word count
sing them into your phone, ideally a mid-tempo and an aggressive version (i.e. if singing along with guitar go for a indie-rock/folk approach and then a more aggressive alt-rock/metal approach)
let it sit for a few hours, then listen back and try to mishear the lyrics into something better, add those to your lyric notebook
go back 10 days later and decide which to keep / develop further
