Advice/tips on how to write great lyrics

Post Body

Hey all! Short backstory. I am a metal musician. I mostly play guitar, but I can also play drums, bass, can do the scary metal screaming, and am a decent enough singer. I absolutely love writing/playing music, but I've never been good at writing lyrics. I am currently in the middle of a pretty rough breakup, and if you know anything about modern metal (particularly metalcore), you know this is often a big area of inspiration. I would loveee to write something that is spurred from this situation, but I'm not really sure where to begin. What approach does everyone use to begin writing their lyrics? Are there methods I should try, or techniques that can be utilized? This is my biggest weak point in the musical department, and I am ridiculously motivated to overcome it.

Thanks in advance!!
