Hey all! This may not be the best place for this, but I wouldn't have known this quickly that this was a scam had it not been for Muta's video on the Social Security breach. I just wanted folks to be aware of this scam and keep themselves and those close to them safe as it seems that there are now scams coming around due to the breach, or at at least it seems that way.
A friend of mine got a call from a Florida call center, we're in Wyoming, saying that he owed hundreds of dollars to a collection agency. They knew his name, number and social security number. When he asked for a receipt or document detailing what company sent this money to collections, they absolutely refused. No matter how much he tried to get them to explain, they just wouldn't. He didn't pay anything, and after the call, checked his credit report and was able to pretty definitively deduce that he had no outstanding debt.
To have so much information on him is alarming, but with the breach that happened, it makes sense. I wanted to warn people because I have outstanding debt that is in collections and had I gotten the call, I would've believed it. I am fairly naïve at times and I know there are a lot of other people who are privy to a lot of scams that may still believe this one, so I wanted to ensure that people knew this was going around.
Sorry if this isn't really the place to put it. I'll delete it if so. Stay safe, folks.
