I'm reading a horticulture text from the UK and it has the following passage:
Growing media options in protected culture are very extensive, but the choice depends on whether the plants are grown in soil, in containers on the ground or in containers on benching. Border soils have been used over the years, but they have many disadvantages, especially with regard to pest and disease problems and the expense of controlling this (see soil sterilization p265).
A Google search didn't really come up with anything.
