What is the relation between Marx's definition of the state and other definitions?
Post Body

Marx's definition of the state is, if I understand correctly, the instruments of class rule that the ruling class of a society uses to maintain its status. Marx's definition, however, is not the only one. Consider Max Weber's, the standard definition used in sociology:

human community that (successfully) claims the monopoly of the legitimate use of physical force within a given territory

Or the standard definition used in anthropology:

a centralized, multilevel political unit characterized by the presence of a bureaucracy that acts on the behalf of the ruling elite

My question is: do you think that Marx's definition implies one of the other two, or that any of the other two imply Marx's?
