Post Body

Graduating this semester with a B.S. in Psychology, 4.0 GPA, no GRE

Volunteer/relevant experience:

  • 2 years as officer for a multicultural council
  • 1 year as volunteer counselor for crisis text line (Trevor Project)
  • 1 summer in Myanmar as volunteer at orphanage (I have family in Myanmar so this experience wasn't through a paid program or anything)
  • 1 semester as TA for a Research Methods class
  • 1 year as a member of service organization dedicated to serving and assisting the aging population (I also became a volunteer for a Baylor Scott and White Calling Program through this org)

Research experience:

  • 2.5 years as a Research Assistant for a social psychology lab
  • 2.5 years as a Research Technician for a computer science lab (hired position, doing behavioral coding)
  • 1 year as a Research Assistant at a clinical psychology lab
  • 5 poster presentations
  • Completed a thesis my junior year

LORs: 2 from professors in the lab I worked for, 1 from a professor I TA-ed for

These are the colleges I shortlisted:

  • Columbia (Reach)
  • University of Chicago (Reach)
  • Boston University (Moderate)
  • University of Washington at Seattle (Moderate)
  • UT Austin (Moderate)
  • Pittsburg University (Safe)
  • University of Houston (Safe)

My primary concern with my application is that I have a good amount of research experience due to my initial goal to pursue a PhD in psychology. My career goals changed halfway through my undergrad, and now I feel like I don't have nearly enough volunteer/industry experience to appeal to social work programs. I'm also concerned about my LORs because all 3 are academic and I'm aware many social work programs prefer at least one professional reference.

Please give your honest opinions. Thank you in advance.
