Adult disability child question.

So my question is. If a child born physically disabled but mentally able and adopted by his grandparents is now an adult.
His grandparents who passed away while they were on social security. Does the child have claim on benefits for who was earning more or on both?
Is their a limit on how long they are able to claim it?
