So I recently had a credit card put in my name which lead me to believe there was some identify theft recently. It was the only thing when I checked everything else and I did all the property steps. Including making an ssa account and when I was scrolling through it said I have over 22k in overpayments. Iāve literally never seen that much money in my life, only been on ssb for a few months during Covid, and have not been receiving any money since. Could this also be something of fraud or just a mistake? How easy would it be to waive this or get this fixed? I also donāt see anywhere on the site to see why or how I owe this much
Iāve also never received a letter about this before or any form of news anything was building up. When I look at the verification letter on the website it says benefits started in June 2015 and ended in June 2015 with 0 dollars paidā¦ so not helpful.
Update: called today and yeah my father did take out money in my name through benefits when I was a little kid. They gave me a ssa-632-BK form to fill out as a waiver. Iām worried Iām screwed though because I checked all 3 boxes of āoverpayment not my faultā āI cannot afford to pay the money backā and āthe overpayment is unfair for other reasons.ā I feel screwed because I just started working a decently paying full time job and Iām worried theyāll see that and disregard everything else because on a monthly payment plan I could eventually pay it off.
