What a learning experience this has been. Looks like everything is going to turn out just fine with our situation.
We called and spoke to her VMHS caseworker who got the ball rolling on the whole MAO Medicaid thing. That is all completed and my job being my girlfriend’s caregiver continues.
Turns out she’s been on Medicare for the past 2 years and literally nobody knew. We had to call them to get her card sent and to pick out a Medicare Plan D for prescriptions. She’ll be getting her Plan D benefits through a different vendor starting in March, but she will have absolutely no co-pays and no costs for her medications. Medicaid will remain her secondary.
We also called the local Social Security office to get some questions answered after she got her finally SSI payment and her first payment from her dads benefits at the same time. we wanted to make sure that no mistake had been made as far as a possible overpayment. They said she was not overpaid and everything was fine.
We were also told that her backpay amount will be approximately $60,000 minus the SSI payments going back four years. So she’ll be getting a little over $30,000 in the near future.
Georgia has a $2000 cap in assets for Medicaid and MAO Medicaid but they are not going to try and take the $30K for cost share. The money will get transferred to my savings account and it can sit and collect interest. The only thing that we’re going to spend out of the $30,000 is paying off our vehicle which has less than $5000 on the loan.
So it looks like everything worked out better than we had hoped for. Thanks to everybody who responded to the original post! We both so much appreciate the responses.
