Hey everyone. My girlfriend (whom I am also her paid caregiver through a Medicaid program here in Georgia) is on SSI since she was disabled (cerebral palsy) at birth. Back in 2020, her father went on full disability and we found out that she is entitled to $1520 a month from Social Security as a child's benefit and she'll get kicked off SSI. As a result, she will also get kicked of Medicaid and I will lose my job as her caregiver.
Four years later, we FINALLY got the determination letter stating that she will start getting the $1520 in February and every month afterwards but says the start date is January 2020.
The letter also says they "may" (which to me mean they most likely "will") withhold benefits received from January 2020 though December 2023. We are confused as to the meaning of this.
My question is will my girlfriend be getting back paid the $1520 times 48 months, minus what they paid for SSI already? We're really stressing over this because we live on our own and we're already looking at our rent getting jacked up by our landlord starting in February plus the fact that unless we resolve the Medicaid issue, I'll be out of a job and we have no where to go and because of my age (59), I am not likely going to finding a decent job out there in the workforce.
We're really scared that a lapse in Medicaid will get us kicked off the program that allows me to take care of her. We're both trying to hold it together emotionally and not get stressed out but this could not have happened at a worse time.
Thanks!
