There are of course multiple arguments against the death penalty. Some of them just donât really hold up, though.
For example, the âDeath is the easy way outâ argument fails when accounting for prison standards in social democratic countries. I would rather live out the rest of my life in a nice âapartmentâ than be executed.
Also, the âWhat if they are wrongly accusedâ argument makes sense in theory, but not always by itself in practice. For someone to advocate for the death penalty, they usually agree that the person convicted must be guilty without a shadow of a doubt.
Of course, the previous argument could be used coupled with this; Even allowing the death penalty gives the courts leniency in their sentence. Maybe not in the start, but as time passes, the laws will definitely be exploited or just plain out ignored, the way they are being done in most (if not all) countries with the death penalty. Also, prejudice based on race, sexuality, or any other features, is prevalent and would never completely stop existing, no matter how hard we would try to root it out. In the end, multiple people would be (and have been) wrongfully executed and found innocent post execution.
The death penalty is a method of control, not punishment.
