Words are powerful things. They sometimes lead to hugs, which are also powerful things.
I dropped a post here proclaiming a need for a little bit of hug therapy and it warmed my heart to receive a few responses agreeing that hugs are, in fact, underrated.
One lovely person with a penchant for Bigelow's "Constant Comment" Black Tea and a budding desire to go hiking let me know she could also use a good squeeze. She's a bit closer to LA so, just like Tom Hanks in Castaway, the next obstacle was logistics.
By some incredible stroke of luck, she was planning to hike down near the exact trail where I grew up (there's no way she could have known, pure coincidence). By a lesser stroke of bad luck, I was working and couldn't join for the hike but we met up for coffee afterwards in Irvine.
The barista tried to compliment her outfit for about a minute and a half before taking her order, a comedy show I didn't even know I needed. Her dry wit and subtle sarcasm was the appetizer to a more substantive conversation about life, cats, roommates, agate stones, family and yes also hugs.
Unfortunately I wasn't able to stay too long since I still had a lot going on with work but before we said our goodbye we shared a brief moment of genuine human connection, and a great hug. It easily made my week.
