I think we peaked as a society when Teddy Pendergrass sang “Lady”, and we’ve been vainly trying to recapture that moment ever since.
Give me a funky bass line and a fiery brass section, and I’m a happy guy. Little things put a smile on my face- a good slice of pizza, driving down PCH with the windows down, live music, strolling through a museum and learning stuff, it doesn’t take much. My best days have usually been surrounded by good friends, my brother, and a couple of drinks.
In my heart, I’m an extrovert, but kind of a bad one on account of my family moving around a lot when I was a kid - so I didn’t have a lot of friends or ever learn how to properly socialize. I’ve got the spirit and the enthusiasm, but I’m also sort of a social klutz and feel awkward 60% of the time, but at least I mean well, and I think that’s what works for me.
Extrovert tendencies aside, I enjoy splitting my downtime between hanging out around the house, watching movies or catching up on a few shows, and exploring all that Los Angeles has to offer. I figure, this is one of the most expensive places in the world to live so I might as well take advantage of the things it offers like being able to see a show essentially any day of the week. I love that aspect of living here, and have made it a goal to see more shows in the coming year (concerts, stand-up comedy, musicals, sporting events, wrestling, anything really). Traveling is also something I hope to do more of in the near future (currently planning a vacation in Japan and a group trip with my buddies their families to Big Bear).
Ultimately, I’d like to find my person, my spark. I know I’m 45, but I still believe in things like sparks and irresistible urges. I still hope to feel like Tamia in “So into you”, still hope to be swept up like Paula Abdul in “Rush Rush”, and I definitely am looking for the type of adventure that Shawn Mendes is on in his video for “There’s nothing holding me back”. Maybe that’s what they call being a hopeless romantic, but for me, I think I just like the idea of believing in magic.
Also, I’m kind of a goofball.
