Genuine Question: Why did many people still believe Waluigi still had a chance after so long?

Im noticing many Waluigi fans coming out to be upset over the new reveal and I have to ask. Im not trying to bash on anyone but wasn’t Waluigi practically De-confirmed since Day 1 of Smash Ultimate’s reveal? Since he was revealed as an Assist Trophy and the theory(Note: I said Theory and not Rule)that Assist Trophies do not become Fighters in the same game is still proven to be true to this day. It would make sense to say he wasn’t coming to smash ultimate this time around? So what kept you guys believing he would still have a chance? This is a genuine question so if im coming off as rude i apologize in advance.
