First let me offer my apologies if this has been posted before. I’ve been re-watching the series and I’m still puzzled on Al and Miles’ obsession with Lana and Clark. Their love story drug itself out for far too long! After a while, I took it as an insult to the character of Lois (and Erica Durance). Why have Lois on the show for 6 years, only to really progress things between her and Clark in what...the last two years of the show’s run? But Lana Clark can (essentially) last 8 out of the 10 years??
In my opinion, they should’ve saved Lana leaving Smallville for season four and made that her exit from the show. After all Lana had gone through in the first three seasons (plus the whole Isobel thing), leaving that town for a long while would’ve made perfect sense.
I really liked the place Lana and Clark were in for the majority of season four, but they completely regressed back to that on-again off-again BS right at the end of it (and for basically the rest of the series). In season four, they were still in each other’s lives, but not in a romantic way. It appeared that they moved and I really appreciated that, but no, they had to put us through that roller coaster relationship yet again.
I would’ve preferred that she’d been gone for a couple seasons, came back for a multi-episode arc during a time when Clark and Lois were figuring things out, and then parted ways. Doesn’t she marry Pete in the comics? Couldn’t they have done something with that? Hell I would’ve taken almost anything over what we got lol.
Anyway, what bothers me the most is what ended up being her exit from the show. Making it to where she and Clark literally couldn’t be around each other completely takes away from their character development and made his budding relationship with Lois look like some sort of fall back plan. Why they just couldn’t realize they weren’t meant to be and decide to end things amicably puzzles me. Would have like to have been in the writers room to see them discuss that.
