Luthor elected president 2018?

In the last few minutes of the last episode a screen shows "2018: Luthor Elected President".
Considering that the election cycle would be 2016/2020 for an election cycle and there is a long list for line of succession if something happens to the President this does bring up a good question.
What could have happened in the Smallville universe that would have required an election in 2018?
Would have to be something drastic to wipe out the full line of succession and require an early election.
