Post Body

Read a few comments lately from users on this subreddit (mostly women) expressing their frustration that they simply can't deal with hundreds of message requests after they post a confession , which is a totally valid concern to have . It's no secret that there are a lot more men on this sub than women and when they do make a post their inbox gets flooded , but here are a few tips that might be helpful if you happen to be one of those users.

Consider tweaking your message settings

There are tools available to you in settings that can help reduce the volume of message requests you might receive , for example restricting newer accounts (created less than 30 days ago) from being able to send a direct message or temporarily closing your dms before making an AMA post or a confession , that might make users leave better quality comments on your post (in theory lol) rather than just the usual "send dm" "check dm" "dm me" "out of invites , pls dm" nonsense. Additionally , rather than feeling overwhelmed by the sheer number of unread messages , instead it gives you more control and you can decide who you want to speak to rather than sifting through 70 or 80 dms that start with "hi/hey hw ru".

(the following steps are if you're on the web browser , might be slightly different if you're using the app)

Settings>Privacy >Allow chat requests from > Accounts older than 30 days/ Nobody

Settings>Privacy> Who can send you inbox messages > I choose

In case you already have a bunch of unread messages and message requests and don't really want to deal with all of them , then I suggest the following

Settings>Privacy>Notifications> Under the "Messages" category >Mark all as read.

If you're a guy reading this and are annoyed by the prevalence of scammers/users cat-fishing and posting fake images on their profile or in dms I suggest reading How to spot catfish/scammers? , it has some informative tips .

Hopefully changing your message settings might improve your experience on Reddit (not just this subreddit) and want you to post/comment or just interact more.

Hope it helps.
