Why is it called a squirrel cage anyway?

I've never seen a squirrel in a cylindrical cage. I mean I get that it's like a hamster wheel. But a) do squirrels run in such wheels? b) why isn't it called a squirrel wheel? A hamster wheel is not a cage. Were pet squirrels more popular when these things were being named?
So many questions.
