Revolution Album Review (from the perspective of a former panhead)
Post Body

I just listened to Revolution. Overall I think it was average but there were a few great songs in there. Here we go.

Showtime: 8/10.

A bit overproduced, but a great intro. John's voice and the guitar riffs in particular sounded good too. Lyrics aren't annoyingly preachy or cringeworthy. Overall a good song with good guitar riffs (the overproduction will be a recurring theme).

Unpopular: 2/10.

Heard it as a single and immediately thought "The entire album is gonna be like this, isn't it?" The answer is "yes and no". Yes, overproduced, but no, in terms of annoying, cringeworthy lyrics. This song and All That Matters are as bad as it gets lyric wise. I will give a bit of credit for John's singing being pretty good though, and smart use of alliteration: "Call me outclassed, outcast". However, why are you complaining about your detractors? Ever heard of "always say less than necessary"? Given how this song is meant to be a jab at people who said that you suck, why would you do that? You're just gonna feed the fire.

All That Matters: 1/10.

All aboard the train to cringe central! On your left we have cringeworthy, country-rock wannabe lyrics! And on your right we have more overproduction, and lackluster instrumentation!

Joke over. I will give credit to John's vocals however. In spite of that, this is the worst song on the album by far.

Not Afraid: 9/10.

If it was a little heavier and it wasn't so overproduced with the guitar riffs getting drowned out, it would have definitely been a 10. A great song with an amazing guitar solo which reminded me of the Comatose days, but if Skillet weren't so obsessed with electronic beep-boops, it could have been amazing! But unfortunately, it falls short of the 10 rating. I was going to give it an 8 but I was impressed enough with John's screams and Jen's vocals that I bumped it to 9.

Revolution: 3/10.

Decent instrumentation, but we're back to the same old problem with overproduction and cringeworthy lyrics, with this being only a bit better than All That Matters. Admittedly, with John complaining about the future generation in this song, it sounds a little bit like literal grandpa (or "get off my lawn") rock. It's awful. Again, John's good vocals and the better instrumentation save the track from being worse than Unpopular and All That Matters.

Ash in the Wind: 6/10.

Already reviewed.

Fire Inside of Me: 7/10.

Another good song. That's all I can really say about it. John's vocals? Good. Instrumentation? Good. But again, the overproduction continues to prevent Skillet from regaining their full potential.

Defector: 4/10.

Just a really boring song. Not much I can say about it.

Happy Wedding Day (Alex's Song): 10/10.

Finally! Just when I thought Skillet was never going to do a song where I can actually recognize a raw performance, they go and pull this absolute gem! A stripped back ballad where John recounts his daughter's life in dedication to her wedding, the lyrics come straight from the heart (which is really all I wanted) and sound like they actually put forth a lot of effort. Great song and one of my favorite Skillet ballads.

Death Defier: 9/10.

And Revolution actually manages to close out with a bang! Still a little overproduced, but I can hear the guitar riffs, John's vocals are still very good, and the lyrics are actually pretty good. Given how our previous closer was White Horse (which was a horrible closer in addition to being Skillet's worst song ever in my opinion), this is a complete 180. A great closer.

Overall Score: 5/10.

Unfortunately, even though there were many good songs, the bad songs (especially Unpopular and All That Matters) are horrible enough to the point where it isn't enough to get the album up to a 6 or 7. So overall, Revolution is an above average album, but is definitely better than its predecessor in my opinion, despite the electronic effects being worse and annoyingly more prevalent. Overall, it still leaves a ton more to be desired, and I just wish Skillet would put more effort into the lyrics and stop with the trend-chasing electronic crap.
