I'm getting really tired of this [user?] error ...

So I'm having trouble with Solid Tools' "Union" and "Outer Shell." Example.

I've tried pre-selecting, grouped, ungrouped, partially grouped, you name it, and I can't get these two freakin' things to become one freakin' thing. What gives?

I'm sure I'm doing something wrong, or have built something stupidly -- are there plugins that'll alert me to stupid mistakes?

How can I get around this?
