Hi there! I am a single mother. My son is four and has not spent any time with his dad. His dad lives out of state and will probably never be a substantial part of our lives. However, my dad is. He helps with care, pays "child support," and will be picking my son up from school starting this fall. My question is: Can I somehow list my dad as a legal co-guardian? Does it matter? I am the only one on my child's birth certificate, and I worry that if something happens to me, he won't be able to get the care he needs.
How have you handled these big issues surrounding care, custody and responsibility?
We live in Washington State. I know it varies state to state, but I'm having trouble finding clear answers.
