Is there a way to make created sims appear in public?

I created some sims a while back and I’m trying my sim to meet them organically in a public space but they never seem to go out. Does this just not happen or do I just have bad luck and they don’t appear in public? I even made my sim go to a nightclub in the same zone as their residence but they’re nowhere to be seen. Thanks a bunch for your help guys!
