Opinions on cleaning

Hi all. So I was wondering some of your guys opinion on cleaning silver? My mother taught me a trick that I believe is not that abrasive if any on her sterling silver chains. And I believe it would work on coins. And that trick is tooth paste. IIt works very well and seems like it won't damage the coin itself. Has anyone else tried it and what ways have you tried?
