Hello everyone! I wanted to reach out to the reddit Sikh community to see if you can help me out. As part of my profession, I am in charge of approving street names. I have a Sihk Temple that will be the first structure off a new road so they get to name it. Here's my problem: because naming roads is a government function I have restrictions we have to meet. I want to help the new temple honor their beliefs but I need to adhear to the rules. If I give you the restrictions, can you help me with some possibilities that I can provide to the temple? I really want to help them pick something they can be happy with.
The restrictions:
- it cannot be a proper name
- it must be easy to pronounce and spell since 9-1-1 is a concern - we tell people to imagine going into a random kindergarten and asking the kids to say the word(s)
- the name must be unique with the county - this hasn't been an issue with the temple yet
- it cannot rhyme with or sound too similar to an existing name
- 16 character maximum limit
It's the second restriction we're having issues with because from a 9-1-1 standpoint most 9-1-1 operators won't be able to pronounce/spell them
Update: I just had a meeting with everyone and they are going with Gurudwara Way. I was able to make a convincing argument that Gurudwara is NOT too hard to say or spell. Everyone is happy and that's all I can ask at the end of the day.
